Keira Knightley stars as Loretta McLaughlin, the reporter who fought 1960s chauvinism to break the story of the notorious titular serial killer, in writer and director Matt Ruskin’s true crime procedural. Loretta McLaughlin (Knightley) is working for the Lifestyle section of Boston’s American Record newspaper when she makes a connection between a recent spate of murders. She and her partner Jean Cole (Carrie Coon) notice that the all-female victims were killed in a similar manner. So they begin to investigate and to publish. But standing in opposition to their efforts is a wall of men who just want McLaughlin and Cole to butt out of their business. There’s their boss Jack Maclaine (Chris Cooper), who helpfully points out that homicide is not for the Lifestyle section. The same goes for Police Commissioner McNamara (Bill Camp), who wants them to leave it to the professionals, despite admitting that the case is baffling his department. So McLaughlin and Cole battle on. They make the connections. They publish the stories. The police even come to rely on their thought processes. But is the Boston Strangler simply a serial killer or something else? And until he’s caught, are these brave journalists safe?
