Michael Bay’s big-budget, chunk-of-your-day disaster movie is co-written by JJ Abrams and stars Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, Owen Wilson, Steve Buscemi and more. As the movie opens, Charlton Heston’s portentous tones remind us that an asteroid killed the dinosaurs. Then, 65,000,000 years later to the day, a Texas-sized asteroid is headed towards Earth. Implication? Humans are doomed. But wait, perhaps not. Super-boffin Ronald Quincy (Jason Isaacs) has a brainwave: drill a hole in the asteroid and pop a nuke in it and blow the damn thing to hell (let’s ignore what might happen if you end up with lots of slightly smaller asteroids hurtling towards Earth). They’ve got NASA and Mission Control, run by Dan Truman (Thornton). All Earth needs now is some people who are good at drilling. Oil drillers, naturally. And not just any old oil drillers; the best oil drillers in the world… maverick oil drillers, some might say. Welcome Harry S Stamper (Willis) and AJ Frost (Affleck) and Frost’s girlfriend and Bruce Willis’s daughter, Grace (Tyler), to the fray. All we need to know now is a) whether the drillers get to the asteroid and do the thing and b) all the little connections and lovely bits about humans that will be lost if the asteroid hits.
