Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning drama starring Russell Crowe (in an Oscar-winning role). It’s AD 180 and Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe), one of Rome’s best generals, is faithful to emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) but tired of military campaigning, so he seeks permission to retire. The emperor denies the request, as he wants to prevent his unstable son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) from succeeding him; instead, he intends to appoint Maximus regent and save Rome from his son’s megalomania. But when Commodus discovers his father’s plan, he murders him. When Maximus refuses to pledge loyalty to Commodus, he’s seen as a traitor who must be eliminated. Maximus flees, but is too late to save his wife and child, who Commodus also ordered dead. Captured by slave traders, Maximus is sold to a gladiator trainer (Oliver Reed). A natural fighter, Maximus is sent to compete at the Colosseum, where he becomes a star, and also gains a slim chance of avenging his family and freeing Rome of a tyrant… With Djimon Hounsou, Derek Jacobi and Connie Nielsen.
